Chapter 26

“What about this one?” Hadley pointed at JD’s laptop screen. “It looks like a great neighborhood.”

JD studied the traditional colonial with the blue shutters. “That’s a pretty big yard.”

“Most people like to have their space,” Hadley said. “Unless you want to reconsider and look at townhouses.”

“No.” JD shook his head. “No more sharing walls with people.”

“I don’t blame you on that,” Hadley said. “I am so tired of apartment living.”

“What made you decide to move?”

“Besides not feeling safe there anymore, the neighborhood isn’t the greatest. I had started looking into places here in Stafford or even as far as Fredericksburg.”

The thought that such a move would have put more distance between her and Spencer popped into his head, but JD didn’t have the heart to bring up any reminders of Hadley’s former boyfriend a second time tonight. Instead, he asked, “Would you switch schools?”

“I’ve thought about it, but I really love my kids.”

“The school year is almost over,” JD pointed out.

“I know, but I feel like I can make a real difference where I’m at,” Hadley said. “Most of these kids come from pretty bad situations. They don’t always know where their next meal is coming from or even if their mom or dad will remember they exist, much less go grocery shopping.”

“Addicts?”

“A lot of them. Some have wonderful parents, but they’re often single moms trying to make ends meet.”

“That’s tough.”

“I know. That’s why in spite of everything, I really want to go to work tomorrow.”

“We haven’t seen any indication of someone tracking you since you came down here,” JD said. “Maybe whoever broke into your place realized you don’t have what they want.”

“Maybe. I still can’t figure out why they stole my computer though. It’s not like it’s new or anything.”

“I haven’t been able to figure that one out either,” JD said.

“If you would catch these guys, you could ask them their reasons.”

“Yeah, I’ll get right on that.”

Hadley’s lips twitched into the beginnings of a smile. “I don’t think you’ve worked less than a twelve-hour day since I met you.”

“That’s not true. I only worked eight hours today.”

“So far.”

“So far.” JD’s eyebrows drew together, and he swiveled in his seat to face her. “How did you know I planned to work some more tonight?”

“Because you’ve been home for over an hour and you haven’t asked me any questions yet,” Hadley said, her expression confident. “I assume you have updates on the case you want to talk about.”

“Yeah.” Seeing no reason to put it off any longer, he pulled up his email and retrieved the images of Rabell. “Have you ever seen this guy before?”

She leaned closer, and he could smell the scent of his soap on her skin. “It’s hard to say. Do you have any with a better view of his face?”

JD slowly clicked through the photos until the sketch finally appeared on his screen. “Anything?”

“There’s something familiar about him.” She shrugged. “It’s kind of like when you see someone in the grocery store but don’t really know them.
